Terms, refunds, delivery & perishable product claims
Clear responsibilities before payment, during delivery and after your order reaches the nominated address.
01About these terms and the Farmer Butcher marketplace
These Terms, Refunds & Delivery Conditions apply to all orders placed through the Farmer Butcher website, checkout, application or marketplace.
Farmer Butcher operates an online marketplace connecting customers with independent Australian farmers, butchers, producers and suppliers. The seller responsible for supplying each product is identified on the product page, farm profile, cart, checkout or order confirmation. Unless Farmer Butcher is expressly identified as the seller, the contract for supply of that product is between the customer and the identified seller, while Farmer Butcher remains responsible for its own marketplace services, conduct and representations.

02Acceptance and checkout order-submission notice
You accept these terms when you place an order, complete payment, select a cut list or processing option, use an account to purchase products, or otherwise accept an offer through Farmer Butcher.
Immediately above the Place Order control, checkout displays a notice explaining that submitting the order confirms agreement to these Terms, Refunds & Delivery Conditions. A separate terms checkbox is not required. Before placing the order, you must review the seller, products, quantities, approximate weights, cut selections, processing choices, delivery address, contact details, charges and final total.
Farmer Butcher may retain the order-submission time, displayed notice, policy version, policy hash, IP address, browser information and an order/address snapshot for fraud prevention, contract administration and dispute evidence, as described in the Privacy Policy.
You must be at least 18 years old and legally capable of entering into a contract.
03Orders, payment and the change-of-mind window
An order is an offer to buy the selected products from the identified seller. An order is accepted when payment is successfully authorised, an order confirmation is issued and the relevant seller accepts the order for fulfilment.
A full-order change-of-mind cancellation request must be received by Farmer Butcher within exactly 24 hours after successful payment. The timestamped cancellation portal on this page is the recommended method. After that period, livestock, carcass weight, butcher capacity, ingredients, packaging, production time or refrigerated freight may have been allocated specifically to the order. Change-of-mind cancellation, reduction, substitution or refund is therefore not available after the deadline.
After the deadline, a refund is not required merely because you changed your mind, ordered the wrong product or quantity, no longer need the order, found a cheaper product, lack freezer space, did not read the description, misunderstood a clearly disclosed approximate weight, or your personal plans changed. A late change may be accepted as goodwill, but is not guaranteed and does not create a precedent.
This clause applies only to change of mind. It does not remove rights for goods that are unsafe, faulty, materially misdescribed, missing, not of acceptable quality or otherwise fail a consumer guarantee.
Farmer Butcher or the seller may cancel an order before fulfilment if a product, livestock, processing capacity or delivery service is unavailable; an obvious price, weight or description error occurred; payment appears unauthorised or fraudulent; the address is outside the service area; or fulfilment would breach a law or safety requirement. Amounts paid for a product that cannot be supplied will be refunded unless you accept an alternative.
04Marketplace role and seller responsibility
Farmer Butcher may display seller information, provide checkout technology, facilitate payment, transmit orders, administer communications, assist with tracking, record concerns, refer claims to sellers and administer an agreed or legally required remedy.
The identified seller is responsible for accepting and fulfilling its products, livestock and product allocation, processing and butchering, compliance with food and product requirements, correspondence with the description, acceptable quality, and remedies the seller is legally required to provide. Farmer Butcher remains responsible for obligations that apply to Farmer Butcher under law.
Nothing prevents Farmer Butcher from assisting a customer, issuing a refund on behalf of a seller, or requiring a seller to address a legitimate claim.
05Natural product variation, carcass weight and boxed yield
Meat, seafood and agricultural products are natural products and are not manufactured to identical dimensions. Unless sold at an exact verified weight, stated weights are approximate or represent an expected range.
Reasonable variation may include total and individual cut weight, shape, dimensions, colour, marbling, fat coverage, bone size, moisture, ageing loss, trimming loss, carcass yield, and the ratio of steaks, roasts, mince, sausages, trim and bones.
A displayed carcass, dressed, hanging or hot-standard-carcass weight is not the same as take-home boxed meat weight. Processing reduces take-home weight through bone, excess fat, hide, organs, moisture and ageing loss, cutting, trimming and customer-selected processing options.
Product photographs are illustrative unless expressly stated to show the exact products supplied. Normal variation that remains within the description and any disclosed range is not, by itself, a defect or basis for rejecting an entire order. Where a minimum weight is expressly promised, the seller must meet it or provide an appropriate remedy for a material shortfall.
06Custom cut lists and processing instructions
Custom cut lists and processing selections are instructions and preferences provided to the seller and butcher. You are responsible for checking all selections before payment.
One part of a carcass cannot always be used for multiple conflicting cuts. Selecting one cut may reduce or remove another. Exact yields depend on animal weight, conformation, fat coverage and bone structure. The butcher may make reasonable technical adjustments where a requested cut is not possible, and butcher judgment may be required to produce a practical and safe result.
Cut quantities and pack weights are estimates unless expressly guaranteed. Whole, half, quarter and eighth carcasses naturally vary. Sausages, mince, trim, bones and secondary cuts may vary with the chosen allocation. A natural yield difference or reasonable butcher adjustment is not, by itself, a product failure. This does not permit a seller to materially disregard an agreed cut list without reasonable justification.
07Delivery estimates, address accuracy and customer availability
Processing windows, dispatch dates, preferred delivery days and delivery dates are estimates unless expressly guaranteed in writing. Livestock availability, ageing periods, butcher capacity, weather, road closures, courier routes, holidays, refrigeration requirements, biosecurity events and other circumstances can affect delivery.
You must provide a complete and accurate recipient name, email, Australian mobile number, street address, unit or building number, suburb, state, postcode, business name, access instructions and safe-place instructions. Completing payment confirms that you checked and approved the displayed details.
Farmer Butcher and the seller are not responsible, to the extent permitted by law, for delay, failed delivery, spoilage, theft or additional cost caused or contributed to by incorrect or incomplete information, an old saved address, missing access instructions, locked gates, inaccessible premises, failure to answer calls or intercom requests, failure to monitor tracking, or another act within the customer’s control.
A requested address or contact change is not effective until Farmer Butcher confirms it has been accepted. Changes may be impossible after labels are generated, packing begins, a courier booking is created, the consignment is collected or delivery commences. Additional redirection, storage, handling or redelivery costs may apply.
08Authority to leave, valid delivery and proof of delivery
Unless a signature-required service is expressly selected and confirmed, you authorise the courier to leave the order at the nominated address without a signature. The order may be left at a front, side or rear door, reception, concierge, mailroom, nominated safe place, with a person who appears authorised at the premises, or another place the courier reasonably considers safe, sheltered and accessible.
Delivery is completed when the order is handed to you or a person at the nominated address, delivered to reception or building management, left at the nominated safe place or address in a reasonably safe location, or otherwise delivered in accordance with your instructions.
Courier scans, timestamps, GPS data, tracking events, driver notes, photographs, signatures, safe-place records and courier-system records may be used as evidence of attempted or completed delivery. Delivery to the address supplied at checkout is valid where Farmer Butcher, the seller and courier reasonably relied on your information, even if the address was old, incomplete or belonged to another person.
Telephone calls, emails, text messages and tracking alerts are conveniences. Delivery does not become invalid merely because a notification entered spam, your phone was off, you did not answer, the courier did not call, or another person at the address received the order.
09Responsibility after valid delivery and prompt refrigeration
Subject to the Australian Consumer Law, responsibility for the security, collection, handling and storage of the products passes to you when valid delivery is completed.
You must monitor the expected delivery window, arrange prompt collection, inspect the order and refrigerate or freeze it without unreasonable delay. Do not leave perishable products unattended or unrefrigerated longer than reasonably necessary.
After valid delivery, Farmer Butcher and the seller are not responsible for loss, theft, animal or insect interference, weather exposure, heat or sunlight, delayed collection, insufficient refrigeration or freezer space, appliance failure, power failure, incorrect storage, damaged packaging caused after delivery, thawing and refreezing, cross-contamination, or handling contrary to labels or instructions.
No refund or replacement is provided merely because an order was stolen, interfered with, exposed to weather, left uncollected or improperly stored after valid delivery. This does not apply where the problem existed before delivery or was caused by Farmer Butcher, the seller or courier failing to exercise reasonable care or comply with a legal obligation.
10Inspection immediately after delivery
Inspect the package condition, temperature and cold-chain condition, seals, packaging, labels, quantities, cut selections, stated weights, missing items and signs of damage, spoilage or contamination as soon as reasonably possible.
If you make a claim about an affected product, immediately stop consuming, using or disposing of that product. Keep the affected product, packaging, labels and delivery carton safely refrigerated or frozen and make them reasonably available for inspection, return or collection.
Do not post perishable goods or dispose of them without written instructions from Farmer Butcher or the seller. Disposal is permitted where retaining the product would create a genuine food-safety risk, disposal is reasonably necessary, or Farmer Butcher or the seller authorises disposal in writing. Take clear photographs and retain labels and packaging before any safety-related disposal where reasonably possible.
Products may arrive chilled, partially frozen or frozen. A product is not automatically defective because ice packs partly melted, an outer carton is damp, vacuum-packed meat appears darker, products shifted in transport, or some products are frozen while others are chilled. The relevant issue is whether the goods remain safe, of acceptable quality and consistent with their description.
11Perishable product and delivery claims
Perishable-product, missing-item, packaging, temperature, weight, cut-list and delivery concerns should be lodged through Farmer Butcher as soon as reasonably possible and preferably within 24 hours after actual delivery. This is a prompt evidence and investigation requirement, not an unlawful exclusion of consumer guarantees.
A report should include the order number, affected product, clear description, delivery time, discovery time, quantity or weight affected, storage details, photographs of the product, packaging and label, courier damage photographs, tracking information and a temperature reading where relevant and safely obtainable.
Farmer Butcher or the seller may reasonably request further evidence, direct the customer to return the affected product, arrange collection, or arrange inspection at an agreed location. The customer must cooperate with that reasonable process and keep the product available until written return, collection, inspection or disposal instructions are provided.
The purpose is to protect food safety, identify the product and seller, investigate courier or packaging issues, determine whether deterioration occurred before or after delivery, verify shortages and select an appropriate remedy. Failure to retain the affected product, packaging, labels or reasonable evidence may prevent the claim from being verified and may affect the available remedy to the extent permitted by law.
Failure to report within 24 hours does not automatically remove a right that cannot lawfully be excluded. However, delay may materially affect the ability to establish when the problem arose, whether cold-chain integrity was maintained, and whether the product remained available for return or inspection.
12Quality concerns, missing items and natural characteristics
Normal colour differences, vacuum-pack darkening, natural marbling or fat variation, differences in cut shape, small differences within a disclosed approximate range, reasonable bone fragments in bone-in cuts, moisture in packaging, minor packaging marks that do not affect safety, reasonable butcher adjustments and personal taste preferences are not necessarily product failures.
Unsafe or spoiled meat, contamination, a broken cold chain before delivery, material packaging failure affecting safety or quality, a materially wrong product, a material discrepancy from an agreed cut list, a material shortfall from an expressly promised minimum weight, undisclosed allergens, or goods that do not match their description may be genuine product problems and will be investigated.
If an item is genuinely missing, the appropriate remedy may be delivery of the missing item, an accepted comparable replacement, a refund for the missing item, a proportionate refund for a verified shortage or another agreed remedy. A missing minor component does not automatically entitle a customer to reject unaffected products or receive a refund for the entire order.
13Product return, inspection and refunds under Australian Consumer Law
Our goods and services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies a consumer guarantee, a right to a refund or replacement, liability for unsafe goods, misleading conduct, reasonably foreseeable loss or damage, or another right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded.
The available remedy depends on the problem and the Australian Consumer Law. For a minor problem, the seller may replace the affected product, supply the missing component, provide a proportionate refund, correct the issue or provide another remedy within a reasonable time. For a major failure, the customer may be entitled to reject the affected goods and choose a refund or replacement.
Except where the law requires otherwise, Farmer Butcher will not ordinarily process a product refund until the affected goods have been returned and received, collected by Farmer Butcher, the seller or an authorised courier, inspected at an agreed location, or Farmer Butcher has given written authority for safe disposal.
The customer must stop consuming or using the affected goods, retain the affected goods, packaging and labels where safe, keep them appropriately refrigerated or frozen, and make them reasonably available for return, inspection or collection. The customer must not post perishable goods without instructions. Where return would involve significant cost, unreasonable difficulty or a genuine food-safety risk, Farmer Butcher or the seller may arrange collection, inspection or written disposal authority instead of requiring the customer to personally freight the goods.
If the affected goods are consumed, discarded, destroyed, lost or damaged after the claim is made without reasonable justification or written authority, Farmer Butcher or the seller may be unable to verify the claim and the available remedy may be affected to the extent permitted by law. This does not apply to a genuinely missing item, authorised disposal, unavoidable safety-related disposal, or another circumstance where there are no goods that can reasonably be returned.
A refund ordinarily relates to the affected product or affected part of the order. A customer is not automatically entitled to a refund for unaffected products unless the failure affects the order as a whole, the products cannot reasonably be separated, the failure is major in relation to the whole order, or the law otherwise requires it.
Refunds will be returned to the original payment method unless that is not reasonably possible, the payment provider requires another process, or you agree otherwise. Store credit will not replace a legally required refund unless you agree.
14Payment providers and refunds
Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST where applicable unless clearly stated otherwise. You must pay the product price, selected packaging or custom-processing charges, delivery, clearly disclosed payment-method charges, optional extras and the final checkout total.
When using PayPal, Stripe, Afterpay, Klarna, Zip or another provider, that service is also subject to the provider’s terms. Approval, eligibility and repayment schedules are determined by the provider. Refunds may be processed through that provider and may take additional time to appear. You warrant that you are authorised to use the selected payment method.
15Chargebacks, payment disputes and false claims
Contact Farmer Butcher promptly before initiating a chargeback so the issue can be investigated and, where appropriate, resolved. This request does not restrict your right to contact your bank, card issuer or payment provider.
You must not knowingly submit a false, misleading or fraudulent chargeback or payment dispute. Where an order was validly delivered and retained, the products complied with the contract, and a chargeback is found to be fraudulent or materially false, Farmer Butcher or the seller may provide the order record, checkout acceptance, policy version, communications, tracking, delivery scans, GPS data, photographs, signatures and other relevant evidence to the payment provider and may seek recovery of the unpaid amount and reasonable direct recovery costs to the extent permitted by law.
A genuine complaint, honest review, payment-provider enquiry or exercise of a legal right is not prohibited. Accounts may be suspended where there is reasonable evidence of fraud, repeated knowingly false claims, payment abuse, misuse of promotions, threatening conduct or a material breach of these terms.
16Food safety, allergens and preparation
Follow all product labels, storage instructions, use-by dates and safe food-handling requirements. Products may be processed in facilities handling common allergens. Sausages, marinades, cured products and smallgoods may contain allergens, and ingredients can vary between sellers.
Raw products must be cooked and handled appropriately. Do not consume products where packaging integrity or safety is reasonably in doubt. Contact Farmer Butcher before ordering if you have a serious allergy or specific dietary requirement, and do not rely solely on photographs or general marketing descriptions for allergy information.
17Liability and events outside reasonable control
Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Farmer Butcher is responsible for its own marketplace services, payment administration, conduct and representations; the seller is responsible for the products it supplies and its own conduct and representations; liability is reduced to the extent loss was caused or contributed to by customer conduct; and each party must take reasonable steps to minimise loss.
Farmer Butcher and sellers are not liable for delay caused by events outside reasonable control, including extreme weather, flood, fire, animal health or biosecurity events, processing-facility closure, equipment failure, labour shortage, courier disruption, road closure, power or refrigeration failure, government action, disease outbreak, cyberattack or telecommunications failure. Reasonable efforts will be made to minimise and communicate material disruption.
If an order cannot be supplied within a reasonable time, an appropriate solution may include cancellation, substitution, credit or refund depending on the circumstances and applicable law.
18Complaints, disputes, privacy and general terms
Complaints should first be submitted to Farmer Butcher. Farmer Butcher may record the complaint, identify the relevant seller, request reasonable evidence, refer the matter to the seller, assist communications and administer an agreed or legally required remedy.
Information reasonably required to fulfil or investigate an order may be shared with the relevant seller, processing butcher, courier, payment provider, technology provider, insurer, professional adviser or regulator as permitted by law and the Privacy Policy.
These terms, the relevant product page, seller information, checkout selections, order confirmation and incorporated policies form the agreement. Specific written product or order terms prevail over these general terms to the extent of a direct inconsistency, but no term excludes a right that cannot lawfully be excluded.
If a provision is invalid or unenforceable, it will be read down or severed without affecting the remainder. These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia, subject to mandatory rights available in another Australian jurisdiction.
